Ecotalk Overview

Ecotalk is a UK mobile virtual network operator founded in 2018 by Dale Vince, the entrepreneur behind green energy company Ecotricity. Running on EE's network, Ecotalk uses its profits to buy and manage land for nature conservation, funding rewilding projects across the UK including Bowyers Wood in Sussex and Downicary in Devon.

Unlike networks that simply offset carbon, Ecotalk directly funds habitat restoration and species reintroduction. In September 2025, naturalist and broadcaster Chris Packham joined as Chief Ecologist to lead the rewilding strategy through the Green Britain Foundation. The network has received ethical accreditation from The Good Shopping Guide.

Ecotalk offers straightforward SIM-only plans on 30-day rolling contracts with no price rises, running on EE's industry-leading 4G and 5G network. Plans start from four pounds per month for a talk-only SIM, with data plans from eight pounds per month. The service deliberately encourages customers to keep existing phones or buy refurbished devices rather than purchasing new handsets.

Coverage & Speed

Ecotalk provides coverage through EE's network, the largest in the UK by both population and geographic coverage. EE offers 4G to over 99% of the UK population and has the widest 5G footprint. As an MVNO, Ecotalk customers access the same coverage area as direct EE subscribers, though maximum speeds may be slightly lower.

Plans & Pricing

Ecotalk offers SIM-only plans on 30-day rolling contracts. All data plans include unlimited UK calls and texts, 5G access, and WiFi Calling. Plans range from a talk-only option at four pounds per month to unlimited data at twenty-two pounds per month.

Roaming

EU roaming is not included by default on Ecotalk plans. Roaming in the EU costs two pounds per day for calls, texts, and data. A fair use cap of 2.5GB per month applies to EU data roaming regardless of plan size. This is among the more restrictive roaming offerings in the UK market.

Our Verdict

Ecotalk occupies a unique position as the only UK mobile network whose profits directly fund land purchase and rewilding. This is not carbon offsetting or tree planting as a marketing exercise. Ecotalk buys and manages conservation land, with Chris Packham's involvement adding genuine scientific credibility.

The plans are competitively priced for an ethical provider, though not the cheapest on EE's network. The unlimited plan at twenty-two pounds per month is reasonable, and the talk-only option at four pounds suits light users well. EE's coverage is excellent.

The significant downsides are the lack of eSIM support, poor EU roaming terms, and limited customer service hours. The absence of a mobile app and basic online portal feel dated compared to competitors. For customers who prioritise environmental impact over features and do not travel to Europe frequently, Ecotalk delivers on its promise of mobile that restores nature.
