About the Oppo A54

The Oppo A54 is a budget 4G handset from 2021 built around one thing above all else: endurance. Its 5,000mAh battery paired with a modest MediaTek Helio P35 chip and a 720p screen means it comfortably stretches past a day and often into a second, which is exactly what most people buying at this end of the market actually want. The trade-offs are honest ones. The 6.51-inch LCD is only HD+, so text and video look softer than on the Super AMOLED panels you find a rung or two up, and the Helio P35 is fine for messaging, streaming and social apps but will stutter in demanding games. The 13MP main camera takes usable daylight shots and little else. What it does keep are the practical touches that have vanished from pricier phones: a 3.5mm headphone jack, a microSD slot for cheap storage expansion and a quick side-mounted fingerprint reader. Five years on it launched on Android 10 with ColorOS 7.2 and its update window has long since closed, so treat it as a spare, a first phone or a low-demand daily driver rather than a long-term investment.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Oppo A54 worth buying?
The Oppo A54 is worth considering only as a cheap secondary or first phone in 2026. Its 5,000mAh battery and 3.5mm headphone jack still hold up, but the HD+ screen, entry-level Helio P35 chip and expired software support make it a poor choice as a main handset for anyone who relies on their phone heavily.
Does the Oppo A54 support 5G?
No, the standard Oppo A54 is a 4G LTE handset only. If you want 5G on UK networks you need the separate Oppo A54 5G, which uses a Snapdragon 480 5G chip and a sharper 90Hz Full HD+ screen.
How long does the Oppo A54 battery last?
The 5,000mAh battery is the Oppo A54's strongest feature and routinely lasts a full day of mixed use with plenty left over, helped by the power-frugal Helio P35 and the low-resolution screen. Charging is 18W over USB-C, so a full top-up takes a couple of hours and there is no wireless charging.
Does the Oppo A54 have a headphone jack and microSD slot?
Yes to both. The Oppo A54 keeps a 3.5mm headphone jack for wired earphones and a microSD slot so you can add cheap extra storage on top of the 64GB or 128GB built in.
Is the Oppo A54 camera any good?
The 13MP main camera produces acceptable photos in good daylight but struggles noticeably indoors and after dark. The 2MP macro and 2MP depth sensors alongside it add little in practice, while the 16MP front camera is the more reliable of the two for everyday shots.
Will the Oppo A54 still get Android updates?
No. The Oppo A54 shipped with Android 10 and ColorOS 7.2 in 2021 and its update window has ended, so it will not receive new Android versions or ongoing security patches. That is the main reason to think twice before using it as your primary phone.

Based on main-sensor size (1-inch / 1/1.3" beats 1/2.0"), telephoto reach (periscope > 5x > 3x optical), image processing tier (Apple Pro, Pixel Pro, Galaxy Ultra, Honor Magic Pro, Xiaomi Ultra), pro video features (ProRes, Apple Log, Dolby Vision), camera-partnership branding (Leica, Hasselblad, Zeiss) and OIS. Older flagships are de-rated since image processing pipelines have advanced significantly each generation. Megapixel count is deliberately downweighted — it correlates poorly with real-world camera quality.

Based on battery capacity (mAh) adjusted for platform efficiency calibrated against NotebookCheck, Tom's Guide, GSMArena and CNET reviewer tests. Apple A-series gets +45% (iOS process freezing + LTPO 1Hz + tuned panels make iPhone Pro Max outlast many 6500+ mAh Android phones in measured tests). Top Snapdragon / Dimensity flagships get +15%, budget chipsets are penalised −15% to −25% to reflect less efficient displays and looser background limits. Charging speed is excluded — see the separate Fast charging tag for that.
