Free WordPress Theme “Gear”
Posted on January 9th, 2009 479 commentsContribute
We’ve recently made our theme ready for localization. If you like to contribute the translation of theme, please contact us and we’ll include it with later releases, thank you.
If you are ready to translate but not sure how, it’s very easy, please go and download the latest version of “Poedit”, then choose “File” => “Open”, navigate to the languages dir, open “default.po”, translate every entry and send the translation to us. You may also want to change the settings “Catalog” => “Settings”. Simple
Tip
The first menu button named “Home” is hard coded, if you like to get rid of it, you could easily do it through an options page.

Why is your theme no longer listed on wordpress extend?
-
Hi there,
I can’t find where to change the looks of the reply placed by the admin. On this blog the admin has a yellow/orange border and such. On my blog they all look the same. How can I change that?
Beautiful theme by the way, keep up the good work!
Kind regards,
Alex-
What version of the theme are you using.
That “feature” was enabled in 1.3.5.

-
Hi,
I really like your template and I was wondering if there’s a way I can add my own banner (header) or my own pictures? Another template I was using allows you to upload your own banner and images so there could be a real personalized look.
Thank you,
Julie
-
You can always replace the images in the themeimagefolder with other images. That way you dont have to change the code.
Take a look under:
wp-content/themes/gear/images/-
That’s what I’ve done too
Works great…when you upgrade just upload everyting BUT the images folder

Will you make a version that fully supports wordpress 2.8? Pages doesn’t seem to work in it.
-
Pages have worked for me…whats the problem?
I am not part of the Gears Team but I really enjoy the theme and will try to help.
-
-
I would like to add an extra column (left column), but I still want to use Gear.
Can you help me out, please? -
Hi, I use your theme on 39 of my 40 websites. One is html. With the advent of WP 2.8 your theme supports 5, FIVE, pages on the menu bar. I just can’t do that. I’ve got articles, Special Reports, and my business is providing information and with ONLY 5 pages on the menu bar I’m sunk. I LOVE your theme, I use it a lot. Please help me!
(Please email me, I’ve left my email addy for you)Tony

Heya Tony….How wide is your monitor?!?! I’ve got a wide screen and well…I’ve got more than 5 buttons on my bar. What’s one of your websites that I could look at?
-
-
Hey I just wanted you to know I built my blog on Gears, tweaked. Thanks MyMobiles. Nice job.
-
On the “Appearence / Widgets” page I’ve recently noticed that I no longer have the ability to click & drag widgets to or from the sidebar. The sidebar doesn’t display on that page anymore. Is this an issue with the recent update to WordPress? Or is there some way to resolve this?
Thanks.
-
That works fine for me.
I use Wordpress 2.8 and Gear 1.3.6.
What versions are you using?-
I’m using the same versions as you. But I have zero functionality in terms of moving widgets on or off the sidebar or rearranging them.
I guess I may need to switch themes. Pretty bad situation.
-
Have you tried deleting the old theme files and then uploading the new ones?
That worked for me one time when I had trouble with comments not showing up properly on site.

They don’t appear anywhere.
Do you also like it?
I don’t.I need them to appear somewhere.
-
It shows up nicely if you ad the widget “pages” into your sidebar.
-
Where is this widget? I tried (and will continue) searching for it. I need to be able to add subpages for this non-profit’s website I’m helping with. Thanks in advance!!

Hi.
Your template is great, but i have found that in single.php the html tag it would be “<html xmlns=”http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml” >” to care care or the language of the blog (as same as in index.php).
Good job!!!!

Hi,
I like the gear theme. It is very practical and easy to use. But I want to use another color for the right panel. Now it is light blue, but I what to use light brown or light orange. Can you tell how to do that?-
I found the answer to my own question.
the right panel is not a color code but a *.gif picture. I create a new picture with a better color.

Hi, is it possible to hide the sidebar on private pages only? Thanks so much.
-
I found the answer to my own question here (and it works):

If I upgrade to the latest release of “Gear” how will it affect the customizations I have made to the various php files? Thanks.
-
All yor customization in the php code will probably be lost but your plugins will work the same way as before.
What kind of modifications do you mean?
-

heya guess what..that banner thing don’t work
“welcome to the st. louis brass band’s new site” comes out..
“welcome to the st. louis brass band\\\\s new site” ! Thought you fixed that a while back.
Now here’s the thing if I put “band&39;s” then it translates to “band’s” Hope this helps. Also I want to put hyperlinks in the banner too. “http://www.stlbb.org/?pageID=34″
comes out “http://www.stlbb.org/%20?pageID=34″ making a broken link. Please help!! -

Any one have this problem?Thnks.

Quick question. I’m using Gear 1.3.5 and I noticed that comments, pingbacks, and the comment form show up on any of my pages even though I have the box checked for “Allow comments” in the discussion area.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
-
-
I would recommend you to use the latest version: Gear 1.3.6.
Try that and post a new comment afterwards if the problem remains.
-
-
-
How can I remove the page titles that appear under the banner.
Check out the link below to see what I mean.
Thanks in advance

I’m using the Gear theme and I love it but I recently installed the All in one SEO Pack… The meta tags and keywords I put into the AIO SEO Pack seem to be blocked by the theme.
What does “SEO ready” mean? Do I have to manually put them in?
Any help would be appreciated!

hi,
I am using gear for my wordpress.org blog and have been trying to add a sidebar to the left, but haven’t been having any luck with it. I would be greatful to anyone who would help
thanks -
Hey guys - great theme. How do I change the color of visited links? I can’t find “a:visit” in the stylesheet anywhere so I’m a little lost.
Thanks
Jerry -
Will you be upgrading Gear to include more than 2 columns? Thanks, Paul
-
I love the theme and I’ve been using it for a while now.
I have two questions…
1) I’ve upgraded to Wordpress 2.9.1 and for some reason I cant edit any of the .php config files (header.php, footer.php…), I get “sorry, that file cannot be edited”. I can’t figure it out and don’t mind using filezilla to edit the pages but I just thought I would throw that out there to make things a little more simple. I’m thinking it’s a file permission setting somewhere.
2) I recently signed up for Facebook and wanted to add a Facebook link right next to the RSS feed link. What would I need to do? The header.php file looks a little too advanced for me. Any help would be appreciated! Or even a point in the right direction.
Thanks!
-
I ended up putting a Facebook link in the sidebar.php file. I think I like it better this way. Hopefully, someone has an idea about editing the files though.
-
I Have the same editing issues with php-files since upgrading to 2.9.x.
Any suggestions, anyone?-
Having the same trouble, cannot make edits after upgrade.
I tried changing the file permissions but it did not fix the problem.
Looks like its time for a new theme.
